After humans clear the forest that was his home, Luo Xiaohei, a mischievous cat spirit, is forced to wander in search of a new sanctuary. He soon encounters a ragtag band of other spirits who promise to help him reclaim the land they believe belongs to them, thrusting him into a world of ancient grudges and hidden magic.

A solitary human named Wuxian intervenes, separating Xiaohei from his new companions and setting them on a joint trek across a shifting landscape. Along the way, the young spirit hones his powers and wrestles with a choice: stand with his fellow spirits or forge an uneasy alliance with the humans who destroyed his forest.
